“Whitening, extra white, bicarbonate, organic fluoride-free” toothpastes should be avoided at all costs since they are too aggressive on the sensitive gums and teeth of children.
The special toothpastes that are currently available for children are very well suited provided that you choose them in terms of the age of your child.
Fluoride remains the best way to prevent tooth decay. It strengthens the tooth enamel through direct contact. At DentistKids, we recommend that you use toothpaste with a fluoride content of:
– Up to 2 years: 500 ppm (a tiny bit)
– From 2 to 5 years: 500 to 1000 ppm (maximum quantity should be something like the size of the child’s little fingernail)
– From 5 years onwards: 1450 ppm, the same as for adults (a pea-sized amount at most)
When your child comes for their regular check-up at DentistKids, our paediatric dentists will provide oral hygiene advice and suitable toothbrushes and toothpaste.
